CV17 (Shanzhong): The Center of the Chest

CV17, also called Shanzhong or Danzhong, is an important acupuncture and acupressure point on the Conception Vessel. It is located on the centerline of the breastbone, approximately level with the fourth intercostal space.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, CV17 is known as an influential point for Qi. Practitioners commonly use it to regulate the Qi of the chest, support comfortable breathing, and address sensations such as chest tightness or fullness. It may also be selected when stress or emotional tension seems to affect the chest and breathing.

For gentle acupressure, place one or two fingertips over the center of the breastbone and apply comfortable pressure while taking slow, relaxed breaths. Hold for approximately 30–60 seconds. The pressure should feel soothing-- not sharp, painful, or forceful.

Acupuncture at CV17 should be performed only by a qualified practitioner using sterile needles. Acupuncture is generally considered safe when properly performed, but incorrect needling can cause serious complications.

CV17 may be included as part of a personalized treatment plan, but it should not replace medical care. New or severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, faintness, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back requires immediate medical evaluation.
