A Simple Way to Relieve Stress, Heat, and Anxiety: Lao Gong (PC8) Pressure Point

Stress Relieve: PC8 Acupuncture Point (Lao Gong) – The Palace of Toil

PC8 — known in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as Lao Gong (劳宫) — is one of the most powerful points on the Pericardium meridian. Its name translates to “Palace of Toil”, reflecting its association with calming excess heat, easing stress, and restoring balance to the body and mind.

Location

PC8 is located in the center of the palm.

  • How to find it: Make a loose fist. The tip of your middle finger will touch the exact spot of PC8.

  • In acupuncture, it’s described as being between the second and third metacarpal bones, closer to the third metacarpal.

Functions in TCM

According to the Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon), PC8 plays a key role in:

  • Clearing Heat from the Pericardium and Heart

  • Calming the Shen (mind/spirit)

  • Reviving consciousness in acute conditions

It’s often used for:

  • Heatstroke or high fever

  • Palpitations and restlessness

  • Mouth ulcers or bad breath caused by heat in the Heart

  • Emotional imbalances like anxiety and irritability

Modern Applications

Modern acupuncturists and reflexologists use PC8 for:

  1. Stress and anxiety relief – Stimulating the point is said to regulate the autonomic nervous system.

  2. Palmar hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) – Especially if stress-induced.

  3. Digestive issues – Some practitioners stimulate PC8 to calm nausea or vomiting.

  4. Emergency revival – Pressing PC8 has been part of first-aid protocols for fainting in TCM.

How to Stimulate PC8

You can use acupressure for self-care:

  1. Locate PC8 in your palm.

  2. Use the thumb of your opposite hand to apply steady pressure.

  3. Press for 1–2 minutes while breathing deeply.

  4. Repeat on the other hand.

Tip: Combine with gentle wrist rotations to improve overall energy flow along the Pericardium meridian.

Precautions

  • Avoid excessive stimulation if you are very fatigued or have low blood pressure.

  • For chronic or serious conditions, consult a licensed acupuncturist.

  • Pregnant women should seek professional advice before prolonged stimulation.

Final Thoughts

PC8 is more than just a spot in the middle of your palm — it’s a gateway to calming the mind, clearing internal heat, and reconnecting with your inner balance. Whether you’re feeling anxious before a big meeting, overheated after a workout, or simply in need of a mental reset, spending a few mindful minutes stimulating PC8 can be surprisingly rejuvenating.
